Transitioning from traditional employment to retirement. My ongoing 6 year journey

Good day Australia – and everyone else who happens to fall onto this site.

This is a story about one person’s journey from full time employment in the corporate sector into that grey area between employment and retirement. The age at which you can fully retire – in Australia – is governed by the Government and is dependent on when you were born. In this period of rising unemployment and the casualisation of the workforce it is increasingly difficult staying employed as you get older. Most agree that anyone over 45 or so is in the danger zone. So with the Government advancing the retirement age and the workplace reducing the “used by date” it is becoming more important that we train ourselves to survive that gap, not just from a financial aspect but also from a standard of living.

So this is about how I have addressed that challenge – which for me is still ongoing as I have another 4 years ahead of me. Do not get me wrong, I am not sitting around waiting for the day to arrive – but filling those days with quality pursuits that are tailored to my life needs.

I do have my lovely lady Jenny with me on this journey and a lot of what I have accomplished so far is because of her support and understanding.

Richard
